LSC Process Technology Center - Generation Park

Lone Star College (LSC) - Kingwood held a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday (10/4/16) for its new Process Technology Center going up across the street from Summer Creek HS in Generation Park. The facility is scheduled to open in September 2017.

“The program will prepare graduates for entry level careers as process technologists/operators in the petrochemical, plastics, food and beverage and pharmaceutical industries,” said Maribeth Stitt, dean of the Business, Technology, Communication and Languages Division at LSC-Kingwood.

The 40,200 square feet facility will be located on 8.3 acres in Generation Park. Until it is built, the Process Technology program will start in January 2017 at the LSC - Atascocita Center. The new program will use state-of-the-art simulation equipment, hands-on training with a fully functional pilot plant, applied technology, and general academic coursework to train students.

“Students will develop the skills required to be successful process technologists/operators,” Stitt said. “Our goal is to prepare students to be competent and confident in the field of process technology and operations.”

In addition to process technology, students will learn instrumentation technology, logistics, and occupational health and safety skills. Students enrolled in the program will have the opportunity to earn second level certificates or an Associate of Applied Science degree. In the future, the program will expand to offer an advanced technical certificate in analyzer technology.

“Lone Star College is a great asset to our community,” said John Flournoy, Director of Sales and Leasing at McCord Development. “Equally so, the college will be a great asset to the companies at Generation Park because they have such a collaborative approach to developing the kind of curriculum that is well-suited to our economy.”

San Jac will keep theirs as most companies require the certificate for hiring now. What this means is students living in the LSC district wont have to pay out of district fees to San Jac. Probably room for both though a little competition is god for everybody.

I agree that our community colleges are one of Houston's greatest assets. However, it seems like Lee, San Jac, HCC, and Lone Star are somewhat competing with each other and investing in duplicate training efforts/materials.

Granted, with the baby boomers retiring, this area will be offering many job opportunities for the next generations with proper training.

Also, a great vision is the cooperative effort of Chevron, HCC, and TAMU, new program to offer two years of TAMU engineering studies at a local campus. Great opportunity to get a first class education with large savings.
