you know - family loss s an extremely traumatic - private thing to deal with. The loss of a child is something I couldn't imagine. But I suppose it happens all to frequently around us. Here is one mothers story - who has decided to speak out in an effort to help others.

www.khou.com/story/n ews/local/texas/2014 /11/21/mother-shares -story-of-sons-

Whether it is from bullying, not fitting in, shame from being different - or whatever; it is something that should be addressed head on in my opinion.

this has nothing to do with the other loss being so avidly pursued on here - but since so many people seem to want to address youth issues around here-

here is a willing platform.

James is now working to make sure other people recognize their value. She started a campaign called Kindness Matters, aimed at spreading the message of caring for one another, just like Payton did.

"He was just really sweet and kind and friendly to everyone," James said. "Maybe one kind act can prevent someone from going through what my son went through."

My heart hurts every time I read something like this. Some are not able to endure the bullying. The person being bullied is tormented and made to question their own self-worth. I wished the little bullies could understand the pain and suffering they are administering.

I was bullied, my wife was bullied, my daughter was bullied. Didn't really effect me but has my wife and my daughter.

This is the story of Ty Smalley: On a Thursday afternoon in May 2010, shortly after his mother dropped him off at home from school, Ty Field-Smalley, who was 11 years old, took his own life. He was only a week away from completing sixth grade. "We buried Ty May 17, 2010," says Kirk Smalley of his son, who had been relentlessly bullied by the same boy at school for two years.

Ty's bully ended up serving only one day of his three-day suspension, the first and only time he was punished by the school for harassing Ty.

The following Monday, after Ty had committed suicide, the bully "went up to a little girl and said that Ty died because of her," Smalley says. "Then she tried to go home and kill herself. The first day of school, after Ty died, the same little boy walked up to my son's best friend and said, 'I took care of one of you. Now let me see what I can do about you.'"

Ty's father is counting every day since he lost his son and he has devoted himself to working for Stand for the Silent , a non-profit anti-bullying organization created by students in honor of Ty.

My wife organized for Kirk Smalley to make his Stand for the Silent presentation at our daughter's school. Some got it - some didn't. We saw some changes.

Kirk Smalley is a great man devoted to the mission of ending bulling. I am in awe of Kirk's passion and devotion to his cause. Loading Image...

One of mine was severely bullied - Started in second grade - I was shocked at the reaction from school.

Timbers counselors and Princ. advised that there was nothing school could do about it and he needed to learn to deal with it and turn the other cheek.

He was black belt by age 10 or 11 - I advised him to put his foot through peoples teeth if it got too bad.

(He told the counselors my advise - didn't go over so well)

I am disgusted by the constant suggestion that kids just need to get thicker skin -

While kids need to deal with issues - I was amazed over the years at how bad some issues could get - and how cruel young kids could be.

RR your story sounds like my daughter's storry and same exact school/administration response except black belt/teeth suggestion - she does not like hurting anything/anyone - wished she would just body slam the bullies - until they stop - I am guessing a couple dozen time should do.

Cruel is an understatement and not willing to stop even after being told to.

Remember Eddie Haskell from Leave it to Beaver?
One little girl was just like that - when adults watching perfect angel - not watching 100% mean _itch and cruel!

Lucky for my daughter - the mean _itch is now at another school - sorry for them!

@redneck roy:

Yes kindness does matter & thanks for this thread & your thoughts . I think we all know & see that some parents are able to do truly great things after the loss of a child no matter what the cause .I think John Walsh has become the most well known father that became an advocate for victims rights & Adams murder helped to spur the formation of the National Center for missing & exploited children & on July 27,2006 Pres Bush signed into law the Adam Walsh Child Protection & Safety Act .Also he is responsible for the Code Adam missing Program for missing children . And because of all of that he was asked to do America's Most Wanted .

And now we see Jackie James who sounds like a strong woman when she says I can find a new purpose , & I can do something to honor him .So 2 examples of many who have been able to make a difference or . they are going to try & make a difference in other peoples lives .

These are the kinds of people I admire & look up to . I can't even dream about the suffering you would feel after a childs death no matter what the cause but SOME find a way to help others ..

Horrific. Your son should have never gone through that. Emoticon

Lucky so far with mine, but the first sign of BS and I'm all over that like flies on shiz! I've been a parent long enough to know that, in general, school personnel doesn't do squat. In many instances, their hands are tied. That needs to change.

I think one thing we can do as parents, in addition to teaching our kids how to deal with both bullying and teasing is also how to stick up for other kids who are getting picked on. If we make it not okay as a society and peer pressure says it's not cool, I think those things can really help.

My second grade teacher told my mom with a sneer that I was "a mother hen". She didn't mean that as a compliment but Mom said it was one to her. I have a really hard time keeping my mouth shut when I see anyone getting mistreated.

I just don't see why we can't all be cordial and tolerant even if we disagree with each other. No reason to be mean!
