A Dallas company that manufactures guardrails for Texas highways made false claims that upon impact they would bend to absorb some of the shock. In a new vehicle collision test the guardrails instead sheared through vehicles like a knife.
A jury is attributing the defect in these guardrails are responsible for a Conroe area four years-old's death. The rail pierced the vehicle and crushed her during a collision. In another instance a college student had his leg severed off by the rail on U.S. 59 near Kingwood.
The jury has ordered the manufacture to pay $175 million in damages. These guardrails are already installed along Texas highways but
TxDoT officials will not identify the exact location or number of rails and will not uninstall them due to high costs.
