@ Mn Twins - what do you want to do when you camp?

Refer to Texas State park web sites - pretty good...

Arkansas state parks are fantastic though - I think they have a state tax dedicated to the park system.

Close and fun for kids Martin Dies State Park. They rent bicycles in the park and have lots of trails for all ages.

Fishing too!

@MN_Twins:

Haven't been in quite a while...I always liked to camp by a body of water, usually a lake or river...Are you planning on going gas/propane only or electricity/facilities? If gas/propane only, you can go almost anywhere...If you'd prefer not to "rough-it" that much and get facilities instead, most lakes have a few Marinas on them that have camping sites...There's also the option of state parks as someone mentioned, here's a link for more info:

Double Lake outside of Coldspring is good. It's close and more importantly, there is some greenery between the campsites! I camp to see woods not my neighbors!

If you are the type that wants a shop, and boat rentals or even a proper lake after this drought, this may not be for you. If you want to hike or bike some trails, see some critters, and just generally enjoy the woods, this is a great place!

And, unlike state parks, you don't have to pay for wood for your campfire. Just go find some. Although they do sale precut wood for the older folks!

There is also a restaurant in Coldspring that delivers meals and bags of ice to your campsite.

Here are a couple of other links for campgrounds. The Corp of Engineers has camping that is usually a little less developed than the state parks and less expensive. Most of them always keep a few sites on a first come-first served basis which is great if you can get away early on Friday and didn't make plans early for a reservation:

Also, the National Park sites in Texas that are often overlooked as people tend to seek out the state parks.
