I went to Ace Hardware on Monday with a nicely bound package to send to my son's office in Lake Jackson. I paid for 1-day priority mail and insured it for $500.

Forgot all about it yesterday and never checked the tracking. This morning my son (who was out of the office yesterday) emailed asking for the tracking number. That spurred me into checking online and finding out it was delivered on time yesterday to a Humble zip code - not Lake Jackson. (WTH?)

After a cluster flip of transfers, button pushing and a 17 minute wait to speak to a customer service agent this is what I got:

No, they cannot read the signature. No they cannot provide me with POD. Someone will call you within 24 hours to "investigate". No you cannot file a claim today, only 21 days after it goes missing. No, they have no idea how that could happen. No, there isn't anyone other information.

Thank you for calling the United States Postal Service.

It probably went to the Humble post office and is sitting there.

@BusyMommy:

Nope, they show it delivered to an address in Humble. I got the address out of them and find it's a rent house over in Foxwood. Lucky me.

Ugh!

I had to file an insurance claim with USPS several years ago on a lost package and it was the most epic PITA ever. Emoticon

Yeah, the USPS has become a disgrace. We are always getting other people's mail, and vice versa. I also hate how they are putting regular mail inside all of the junk mail. No wonder there are times when we haven't received bills (luckily we pay everything on line). I tell my parents to never send money or gift cards in the mail anymore because delivery is such a gamble these days.

I get your frustration. They lost our packages 3-4 times over the 5 years that we've been here. We always get the replies that they will investigate it and they never found them. In our cases we lost the packages that were sent to us so we just notified the seller that we didn't get them and let them deal with USPS. Twice it was such a small item (Texans socks and license plate frames) that we just let it go and reorder them.
I have an actual direct phone number of the Humble's office's manager if you want. Not that I think it will help.

I agree! I was waiting on a package that the tracking information said it was delivered. Did not receive it. (We have the community mailboxes at the end of the street.) Filed a complaint online. Someone from the post office called and I told them I did not receive it. She said "well it shows it was delivered." I told her it may have been delivered, but not to my address. About a week later a neighbor rings my doorbell and told me he received a package for me. It was the one I was looking for!

I also hate now when you order something online that it is first shipped FedEx or UPS, but then gets delivered to the post office for delivery to the house. That adds 2-3 days before you actually receive it. A lot of companies are going to that now and it stinks.

That is ridiculous! I would be so ticked off! Why would someone even take something that isn't theirs. What trash!

This is the reason why I think the USPS should be shut down. They are a joke.

Have a very interesting update. The package in question had my sons iPad inside that he left at my house last weekend. (Too much Reefer Madness for us I guess!).

When I told him about my call with the USPS I was on my way to the address they said it was delivered to. He called back about 5 mins later and hold me to cool my jets. Seems he had that "locate me" service on his apple products and his phone was showing the iPad in Lake Jackson within one of his buildings. He got his hands on it about 30 mins ago.

I called customer service back and said I had reason to believe the package was not at the Humble address and to recheck their system. Seems it's still being investigated so they cannot accept the update from me. WTH?

Incompetence at its finest.
