Be prepared for outrageous, never-ending vet bills if you opt for an English Bulldog. Not only are they expensive to buy (I think the average for a pre-bred puppy is about $1,500-$2,000), and they don't have that long of a life-span (on average). My husband used to have one.

Oh, and they fart A LOT.

Personally, my favorite indoor dog is a Shiba Inu, as they are extremely clean (they clean themselves like cats) and have no stink on them, but they are very strange little dogs with larger than life personalities. They are great as indoor dogs, but like any dog, they do need to get out for exercise. I don't think I have ever heard or smelled mine pass gas. They are my favorite dog breed, but they are not for everyone.

Oh, and I know somebody who had a French Mastiff. They are hard to find, very expensive, and have a very short average life-span (5-8 years). She told me stories of how he pretty much ate her house when he was a puppy.

Between the two that you mentioned, I think a bulldog might be a good choice.

I have an English bulldog currently. He is adorable and once we got him on the right food, never farts. lol.

But super high maintenance as LG mentions.

You will have to
1. Wipe his butt daily, yes with wipies like a baby
2. Clean the folds in his face and between his toes every other day, again like a baby
3. Watch his weight like a hawk. They gobble food without chewing or breathing and will eat themselves to death if you allow. You will have to measure his food and feed him twice a day and make sure he gets excercise.
4. They are very prone to ear problems and you need to treat right away if they start itching.
5. They cannot cool themselves and cannot be left outdoors. 5 minutes on a hot day max. Seriously, I have friends whose Bulldog pups died in 90 degree whether in 30 min.
6. They are allergic to the world and need weekly baths, daily Benedryl, and lots of scratching.
7. They shed like a BEAST! For being so short haired, they shed like crazy. We actually vacuum our dog.
8. Lots of other health problems likely with age
9. They live to about 8yo.
10. They don't breed naturally, have to be artificially inseminated and have a c section and thus are very expensive.

I would say this breed is the most unhealthy breed there is.

But they are awesome and cute and smart dogs. True people dogs, they just want attention from any humans they see.

Food will be very expensive and not the type you can get at the grocery store!

I agree with macdaddy. I have a runt of the litter chiweenie and he's the best. Very smart, can even open his own kennel door when it's time for bed.

Whatever you decide I hope you decide to rescue a pup.. so many shelters out there overflowing with great dogs.

I have a toy Yorkie and Chihuahua, both under 5 lbs...both very mild mannered.
I also have Poms but they are very vocal and demand attention.
These are lap dogs and have been very therapeutic for Hubs when he was sick.

These are my stand-by grand babies.

Have you considered a greyhound? They're clean and easy going, and quite lazy most of the time. They aren't prone to any serious health issues. As ex racing dogs they already have good discipline and people skills, and wouldn't cost much to adopt. There will probably be many retired racing dogs looking for adoption at any track. The downside is that they cannot go outside without a leash in case they try to chase something, so they should only be loose in an enclosed area, and they do like to sprint around for a minute or two if they're loose.

Are they stubborn and hard to train?

They definitely have stubborn personalities. Personally, I don't think they are hard to train, and almost potty train themselves because they are so clean, and don't want to be anywhere near their "mess". They are extremely smart, but I think too smart for their own good. They know commands, but just don't feel like doing something because they are so stubborn. They will only do something if they know they are going to get something out of it. If they are trained and socialized early on, they can end up being wonderful dogs. I have had 3, including the one I have now. The one I have now, I adopted from somebody else, and they invested in training early on, and he is a fantastic dog. He's great with our kids, never had an accident, doesn't destroy anything, but is pretty stubborn.

Oh, and if they get out of the house without a leash, be prepared to go on a wild goose chase to get them back!

I would recommend a boxer. But some of the allergy and skin issues will happen with them too.
