I recently got a mountain bike and would like to explore some scenic places to ride. River Grove Park and East End Park in Kingwood sound nice, but I've heard they tow your car away if you're not a resident. My realtor suggested parking at a nearby church. Is that the best option? There's no risk of towing then?

There are no guarantees the church will now tow you.
Chain your car to a nearby tree.

@Anurania:

River Grove Park will tow you, East End Park will not.

If you visit River Grove I agree with your realtor park at the churches on Woodland Hills nearby. It is extremely unlikely that you will be towed.

I used to live in Kingwood. Visited East End Park a bunch. I didn't have a K sticker and was never towed in the 5 or so years I lived there.

They have been cracking down on towing cars without the K sticker lately, especially at River Grove Park. I wouldn't risk parking without a sticker. I've never ridden my bike at River Grove, but I have launched the boat there several times. I don't think there is much to see, you probably won't want to bike there more than once. Many people just park on the street or in the woods nearby, I'm sure parking at the church would be fine.

East End Park has several bike trails and I don't believe they tow. There are streets nearby to park on if you are worried about being towed.

@Squeaks:

Thanks for the info. Do you happen to have any suggestions of other places that are good for biking in the area? Riding on the streets gets a little nerve wracking after a while, even with my bike lit up like a Christmas tree.

I've never been to River Grove park, but didn't really think there was much in the way of trails there anyhow. East End is nice, very flat and fairly wide in most areas. The trails are groomed, crushed granite; no single track, but for a place to ride that is close I guess it wouldn't be bad. There is Riverwood middle school about 1/4 mile from East End that has plenty of parking and it would be an easy ride into the park from there. I think the towing is sporadic, and 95% of the time you're probably fine, but why chance. There is also a street that turns to the north, immediately before entering the parking lot, where you could park a few cars. I think the school would be the best bet.

My suggestion, when you have the time, is to head up to Lake Houston Wilderness park. Several miles of trails and some gravel roads to get out on and it would probably be a more enjoyable time. A fair amount of single track with a little bit of small, undulating hills mixed in, but nothing too challenging or severe. There are park hours though and they do close gates at night - which has always made me question the "Wilderness" part of the name. Not used to seeing wilderness parks closed or with defined hours. Anyhow, there is a day use fee, but you can also buy an annual pass for like $25 I believe.

Other good rides, but more distant, would be at the single track trails at Memorial Park in Houston, or up at Huntsville State Park.

There is a nice trail along the golf course pond off KW Drive. If you park at the Methodist church on Woodland Hills, you can pick up the greenbelt nearby.
