My DD #1 is in the top 10% of her class starting Junior year. With that said, she takes all AP classes and such; however, has always had a very difficult time in math.

So, started Monday and immediately realized she is over her head in AP Calculus! She is very mature and took it upon her self to visit one on one with her teacher and they both agree she is not fundamentally ready for this class.

So, I call the appropriate Counselor today to have her moved to a more appropriate class one in which she will survive. I gave him the above information and much to my surprise. The principle at this point is not allowing any changes for approximately 3 weeks.

Now, I explained to him via her teacher she is not fundamentally ready for this class! As you know, one must learn basic math and build upon it. Logically it makes no sense to spend the next 3 weeks in this class waiting on this rule to transfer out.

I explained as I think most would she will be sitting in this class waiting on the bureaucratic tape and continuing to miss instruction in the appropriate class. Again, he explained his hands are tied and she must wait it out!

Does that make any sense to you? Common sense says, if a teacher and student agree the student is not prepared for the class then get in one which you are!

I'm not mad at the Counselor actually by the time the conversation was over we understood each other. I think it's a damn shame when you want to be a Counselor and your objective should be the student but due to our Education system it's all about the numbers!

When I was growing up, we went to our Counselor for everything. They almost acted as the liaison b/w student and principal!!!!!

It reminds me of when you pay your $20 co-pay and your Doctor gives you a prescription and the insurance declines to fill it. What's wrong here? Who's the damn Doctor?

An unfortunate position to be in now days is a school Counselor! You can't counsel!!!!!

If your job is to see a student succeed then why would you allow a student to sit for 3 weeks waiting on class transfer approvals as you are aware the teacher agrees with the student?

You know we all may ask...what's wrong with this generation...what's wrong the educational system? I admit today some of this BS is our fault. We continue to sit back and accept instead of standing our ground and fighting. I don't mean fighting literally either!

So, imagine this.....my junior top 10% sitting in this math class for the next 3 weeks blowing bubbles or scratching her *** waiting on AHS to finalize transfers.

The system is so messed up!!! This is not right this is not how it works @MooMaw! For those of you with younger kids believe me the older they get the less control you have over all. Like it or not!

As @HumbleGirl would say, tonight that's all I got!

WOW!

I feel your frustration...two words...common sense. ..it is used less and less. ..and we are left trying to survive in the madness.

You are right..this isn't how this works...this isn't how ANY of this works...

So my approach today is to let my daughter speak to her teacher again and see if the teacher can help get her transferred!

I want the teacher to know what transpired and what was said there for maybe the teacher can help influence the choice to move her now.

I'm sure there is a valid reason for the policy - but - it shouldn't be a concrete thing - very possible counselor could be making excuses?

Well this is just unreal & now we know why people want to home school their kids . I'd find a tutor today & a book & I would have that tutor get the lesson plans & each day keep her up with the class where she needs to be . She is a smart kid by all you are saying & not the type to think school is not important & this will be upsetting for her if she gets behind . I would let the school know I am going to the school board ,I am not going to take this lightly & sit back & see this happen to my child . Google Complaints to Humble school board . They say THE BOARD & THE SUPERINTENDENT WORK TOGETHER TO ASSURE THE BEST INTEREST OF THE COMMUNITY'S CHILDREN & THE PATRONS OF THE SCHOOL DIST .So print this out & go give it to the principal , teacher , counselor & let them know fix this problem today or I am forced to go to the school board . I WOULD BLOW THE SHIP OUT OF THE WATER !!!

That sucks, LG. Is her counselor Mr. Wheeler? He won't do anything without Daniels' approval. I agree with being the squeaky wheel and hounding Daniels until you get what you need. I've been there, almost in this exact scenario as you. It'll get done...just have to make some noise! Emoticon

@lynnsgirl My DD (you know her) had a WONDERFUL tutor in KW (not too $$). As long as she can get the other class' lessons and have the benefit of a tutor assisting her until the "Powers that Be" sign the magic paper she can keep up in the other class work. The thing that stinks is that she will then be 3 weeks behind in the instruction that she really needs! Ugh... hate it! went thru so much last year with my DD and getting her set up. UGH!! I feel ya! Prayers for yours... she's great, she'll get this!

Be careful. Just saw this on click 2.

CALLAHAN, Florida - A Florida mother is outraged after her 4-year-old son was expelled from the private Christian preschool he attended because of a Facebook post on her personal page.

Ashley Habat said she was upset the school didn't give parents more time to get ready for picture day, and so she vented about it on Facebook.

The next day, the school told Habat that her son, Will, could no longer attend.
Habat said she doesn't regret expressing her opinion, which she said was posted to her private page for only her friends to see. Regardless, she doesn't believe her son should be punished for something she wrote, she said. And she wishes the school had tried to work with her before expelling him.

Habat said she and her son ran late for school on picture day at Sonshine Christian Academy in Callahan, and she mentioned to the administrator checking Will in that she thought the school didn't give enough notice of picture day. The administrator said they put a note in Will's folder the week before.

Habat said she took to Facebook to vent her frustrations and never expected the school to see her post.

The post read, "Why is it that every single day there is something new I dislike about Will's School? Are my standards really too high or are people working in the education field really just that ignorant."

She tagged the school in the post, and the next morning, she received a call, asking her to stop by the office when she dropped her son off.

"They just felt like we weren't the right fit, parent relationship with the school, and that they didn't want him as a student anymore," Habat said. "He had done nothing wrong."

According to the letter of dismissal, Habat's “relationship with Sonshine did not get off to a very good start the first day of school. … You utilized social media to call into question not only the integrity but the intelligence of our staff. ... These actions are also consistent with sowing discord, which is spoken of in the handbook you signed.”

"I was in shock," Habat said. "Why would you expel a 4-year-old over something his mom posts on her private Facebook page only people on her friends list can see?"

The principal of Sonshine Christian Academy sent News4JAX a response saying, "This is private matter involving the school and a parent," and "Due to my concern for families, I am unable to comment on specifics of this situation."

@discoshelle:

What I was meaning was to get a tutor in the class that the daughter wants to be taking , that way she won't be behind at all in the class . I was thinking this could be resolved in perhaps 3 or 4 days . But during that time she is missing out on those classes so get a tutor to teach them to her .

I would write an email and cc her counselor, her AP, her teacher and Mr. Daniels. I would follow up with it every day with another email until someone does something.

Was she in an PA math class last year? If no, I am surprised that they allowed her to take AP Calculus if she struggled with Math in previous years.

Thank you I did just that today. I included Daniels, Perkins her house prinipal, counselor and teacher.

Are you ready? She took an on level math class last year it was her first on level class ever!

As a parent, I'm like this request is common sense so thank you so much for the advice bc I do appreciate it.

It is ridiculous!

@cheryltom:

Your daughter will be in the class for 7 more class periods at which point we will move her. At present the schedule will not absorb a large number of level changes. To build it to do so would mean starting the Pre AP at 35 students and I am not willing to do so, nor would that be fair for anyone in those classes. We take the level drop requests and if they are numerous we disperse one of the Pre AP classes and create a new Algebra III class.

Again, she will be moved if you still desire it, but not immediately.

THIS IS HIS RESPONCE!!!! Do you know what pisses me off the worst? It's no longer about the students it's about a numbers game!

We as a society wonder what's going on with our student's education well here is a perfect example!

I'm very tempted to schedule to speak at the next board meeting in reference to this bc I do believe this sets the precedence for our education in Humble schools.

WOW, so he knows now she doesn't even have the required prep class to be in the current class and his decision is to leave her there.

Who fights for the kids now days besides the parents?

Thanks
