Anyone catch the story on Local 2 this morning about how much area schools rake in every year from fees collected to get confiscated cell phones back? AHS was in 2nd place with over $13k in fines collected. AHS said that out of those funds, they've only spent just over $800 for 10 megaphones. Humble ISD as a whole collected over $34k. Dang! Emoticon

Anyone here ever have to fork over that cash? I haven't...at least not yet!

@sandman:

News said some teachers at most schools are starting to let students use their devices for research stuff, etc. But not just general texting and other shenanigans. Emoticon

My son has texted me multiple times from school so far, mostly with lists of things he needs, but he said they are allowing texting now, at certain times. And this is AHS. Previously, he never texted me from school.
And I did read something about Humble ISD now having a BYOD policy. Here's what I found:

Humble ISD begins BYOD
Humble ISD has updated its rules so that middle and high school students can use their own mobile phones, tablets, laptops and other internet-accessing devices at school in certain situations.
Today’s students live in a world where technology is embedded in everything they do. While many young people use technology for entertainment and to socialize, they also will need to know how to use technology appropriately in more formal academic and professional settings. By permitting students to use personal technology devices, schools help students be better prepared for college and the workforce. Additionally, the new procedures support teachers in their use of apps and internet-based materials that engage students in curriculum content.
The new policy is part of the updated Responsible Use Policy and can be found in the Student Handbook.

Yes this happened to one of mine. They tried to discipline him for a false text he sent on the weekend about being at some party when he was actually with me physically and not at any party!

Take up the phone if they should not be using it, fine. Fee okay but there needs to be a published acctg for where the funds will be used.

But do NOT rifle through the phone content. That is out of line.

I'm fine with them taking the phone, I'm not fine with them charging a fee to get it back. Why would anyone pay it?

I know several parents who have tried to fight the fee and all lost.
