First Day of School Letter!
Yes, Monday, August 25, is the first day of school for the 2014—2015 school year! We are ready to see your child this year! Please PRINT and read this letter so that your child is ready for Day #1! Please have your child read this as well.
Did you miss Tiger Check-In on Aug. 8/13? Students who were not able to attend TIGER CHECK - IN will go through the registration process the first day of school. Parents and students will report to the Amphitheater. A parent/guardian MUST accompany his/her student and complete all necessary paperwork and HAC update. Click HERE to visit the AMS registration page. Scroll down to RETURNING STUDENTS and follow the step by step instructions.
All students are required to have an AMS agenda. Student agendas will be for sale the first day of school for $8.
ID Badges! New for all HISD middle & high school students — students wear ID badges each day. The colored ID with student picture will serve as one component of school-wide safety, while the bar code will allow us to be more efficient in the lunch lines, library, discipline, and elsewhere. NO COST for the first set of lanyards and badges, but students will need to pay a replacement cost for lost IDs. Students can choose to wear their own (appropriate) lanyard during the year. Please speak with your child about a routine of where to keep the ID when he/she takes it off. Students will receive their ID by the second week of school. Click HERE to review the AMS ID Badge Policy.
View Schedules: Schedules can be viewed through Home Access Center (HAC) beginning Friday, August 22nd. Schedule corrections (level changes—OL/pre-AP, missing a class, in/out of Band/Orchestra/Choir/Athletics) will be made for errors based on original course requests, class size, and class availability. Schedule changes will only be considered based on the original course verification sheets (no changes will be made from the course verification sheets). For example, if a student now wants Art and had Foods for Today on their course verification, the change will not be approved.
Building Open Saturday: The building will be open on Saturday, August 23rd, from 9am—12noon, for 6th graders or any students new to AMS to walk their schedule. Teachers will not be present, but is a good time for new students to see where their classes will be. Please print your child’s schedule off Home Access Center before coming.
School Supplies! Look on the AMS main webpage under “Latest Headlines” (center column). Did you buy the SchoolKidz school supply kit and EITHER not get the supply kit at Tiger Check-In OR SchoolKidz was shipping missing boxes to AMS? Students can pick up your SchoolKidz school supply kit in the main office. Students were missing the 3’ binder in theirs kits. All students who ordered school supplies and were given the wrong binder, will be given the correct binder within the first week of school.
Required Purchases: (1) Every child must purchase an agenda book (required for assignments, hall & bathroom passes) -- $8.00; (2) PE uniforms (required for PE, but students may use PE shorts & shirts from previous years) -- $10.00 for shorts, $10.00 for shirts; PE uniforms can be purchased in the PE class during the first week and anytime thereafter. Purchases can be CASH OR NEW! One-time Credit/Debit Card purchase online!
Day of School is Monday, August 25th: All students go to the gym and pick up their schedule on the first day! After getting their schedule 6th grade students sit in the cafeteria while 7th/8th grade students go to the Commons, Courtyard, or Tennis Courts! Students move to their 1st period class at 8:35 am.
Eating lunch! Lunch lines tend to take longer on day 1. We do extend lunch about 5 minutes on the first day. Regardless, lines are long. We do encourage students who can bring a sack lunch on the first day to do so to ensure they get to eat their lunch without rushing.
Calculators: 8th grade students (both OL and Algebra) will be allowed to use a calculator on their STAAR test this year. Therefore, we will be using them in class often throughout the year. We are recommending that all 8th grade students purchase a calculator for use at home and at school. We do have sets at school, but students may want to use them at home. They will be using either TI-83 or TI-84 calculators in their math classes, so those would be the best to purchase. (TI83+, TI84+ are also acceptable).
Program Fees: Band, Orchestra, & Choir typically had parents purchase a shirt, uniform, theory book, or pay a supplies fee, etc. over the course of weeks the beginning of the year. Instead of having parents pay multiple, smaller fees, we are combining all the items into one Program Fee. Program fees vary by Fine Arts program. Once a parent pays that one-time Program Fee, the items will be disseminated to your child during the year. The Program Fees can be paid by cash or online using a credit card (RevTrak). More details to come.
We are going to have a R-O-A-R-ing good year in 2014 – 2015! See you soon Tigers!
