been riding on weekends on the mountain bike - but need to step up to a road bike - been riding 10-25+ miles on the mountain bike - so am thinking of a good road bike.

they are darn expensive. Any cyclists on here with good suggestions -

thought maybe I would as before dropping a wad of cash & wasting some money.

I'm partial to the Specialized brand myself. Bike Barn is a good place to start- they carry Specialized and Trek. Have them fit you to a bike and remember what size they put you on and then go around to different shops and try different brands. Bike Lane in the Woodlands carries Specialized and I believe Cannondale. Sun Ski and Sports carries a lot of different brands and is a good place for a beginner. I bought my first road bike there for around 800. 800-1,000 is a good price for an entry level road bike. BUT fit and comfort are imperative!! There is another option that's more comfortable. Buy a hybrid bike- looks like a mountain bike but it's not as heavy and change the tires out from the knobby all terrain ones to road bike tires. I did this before I bought my first road bike. That way you can find out if you really like riding on the road. If you don't you can change the tires out and use it on the trails. If I'm riding solo I ride in Duessen and Eisenhower- low traffic and pretty scenery. The bike shops also have information on sponsored rides- they're lots of fun- the money usually goes to a good charity. There are different mileage options with rest stops and rider support for break downs or a ride back to the start. Enjoy and learn the laws as they pertain to bicyclists- please don't become one of the morons I see blowing through stop signs and lights!

Thanks - got fitted at the bike barn. Been doing the deussen park & eisenhower loop. the gear ratio on the bike I'm on now just isn't giving me the workout I need. I will try Sun & Ski sports as well - forgot about them - I remember REI has a fair selection - but overall - looking online - it looks like most of what I find will be comperable in price for similar spec'd bikes.

What's your drive train? Triple or compact? I never could find a happy place on a triple- so when I bought my Specialized I went with a compact. A triple chain ring is not needed here- no hills. I don't think my bike with the triple has ever been in the granny gear.
I've found that a lot of new riders tend to grind- big gear low cadence. They will never get their heart rate up doing that- just tired legs. I tend to be a grinder also- because I teach indoor cycling. I've had to really work on the cadence- I try to ride between 85-90 rpm in a decent gear. I produce more power which in turn makes me go faster

^^Its a triple -- but I stay in high gear - keep the rpms up - running it @ 14-20 mph sometimes go down 1 gear so DW can stay with. Road 25.5 miles yesterday - don't think my heart rate ever got over @ 140; just peddling like crazy.

Did you feel like you were working-heavy breathing ect? Not sure a road bike will give you a harder work out. It will be lighter and you'll be more efficient in your power output therefore be able to go further faster. Running might give you the hard workout feeling you're looking for. Don't get me wrong cycling is a great workout and can be quite hard- but most cyclists are looking for a steady output of power. For me I keep my HR to 155-160- that's where I feel like I'm working but can maintain that out put all day long. Now when I'm taking a class- it's only an hour so I work at much higher heart rates170 plusIf you belong to a gym have a VO2 test done and see what your zones are.

^^Ha Currently training for half marathon - using cycling for cross-training. got my zones & working with a trainer on the diet & marathon training.

I didn't feel like I was working heavy - almost there but not quite - seemed like I was peddling @ 70-80 rpm without enough effort to get my heart rate up where I would like it (150-165).

You teaching at LT?

@redneck roy:
Well now that does make sense. It is a good cross training exercise. But running is harder so when you ride - you're not working as hard. You have to adjust your zones to the exercise at hand. For instance if you were training for a triathalon- your HR would be it's highest in running and cycling HR would be lower but higher than the swimming . It has to do with how hard your heart has to pump to fight gravity- you're more vertical running and more horizontal swimming. If I were you I wouldn't sweat the HR difference- just know that it's for cross training so you use different muscles and skill sets. Good Luck!! I jog a bit but really suck at it- just can't get into it mentally. My dd and dh love running better than cycling.

@lynnsgirl:

not depressing - good for you - you've been working - better than most - I'm only getting in shape after Dr. threat - I am worried if I don't keep pushing myself - I will relapse.

besides - I have no kids at home to chase after - so I have extra time to devote.

That's right!! Every little bit of activity helps and everyone must start somewhere!! Here's how bad of shape I was in. I was 30 with a baby and a toddler- we had bought a new van. One weekend we were washing and detailing it. Afterwards I was so sore I could barely get out of bed. I decided then and there I never wanted to be that sore again from doing a simple task. I started doing small bouts off exercise until I was fit enough to join a gym and do weights and classes. 26 years later I am an avid cyclist ( maybe not the best but I am dedicated), I am a certified Group Exercise instructor, Personal Trainer and Advanced Fitness Professional. I still workout almost every day, I teach cycling and right now am training for a century in Sept.
Never give up and keep moving- it really is the fountain of youth!!

In any case don't ride in Walden. No bike lanes or sidewalks. You're likely to be squished like a bug

@AtascaGuy:

there are bike lanes on the roads - there are also paved trails - I think it is @ 3 miles riding the road loop around the park.
