For stepping up to the plate and sending 1,000 national guardsmen to the border to help protect our national security.

glad this has been such a continuous high priority for him over his 14 years in office......

although he did have to announce this bold plan while on the campaign trail for the 4th time this year in Iowa.

surely not a political gesture.....

Right now the border needs all the help they can get. The texas rangers and Fish and Wildlife officers are also on the border.

^^^ yes - political reason - purely.

Although Obama hasn't been any softer on border security than his predecessors.

this move by perry is nothing short of political grandstanding; although I welcome any enhanced security.

I saw the TPWD patrolling the rio grande.... I'd be curious as to what their job in that area is; ; whether it is actual TPWD business or if they are glorified border patrol with full obligations to capture immigrants; and along that note; I know that several years ago it came to light that the funds raised by the TPWD plate was going directly to the states general fund instead of being earmarked for TPWD funding as purposed; I wonder if the funds raised by that plate could actually be going to enhance border security - by way of TPWD patrolling border instead of funding our park resources.

I am confused...Do you agree with him calling up the NG for support, or not?

@redneck roy:

The Texas rangers and Fish and wildlife officers will enforce State laws and make arrests according. many of these illegals and smugglers will often have drugs or weapons on them and charges for these offenses will be more steeper than an NTA removal.

I like the idea even if political though I feel bad for the troops since they will probably have to live in tent cities not to mention they will have to put their careers on hold until they are released. But curious about their role. If I remember right from my brother's national guard days when he had to pull hurricane duty they don't have any legal rights to arrest anyone. They had to be paired with local law enforcement and was more their for physical back up. And I believe they are not armed. If you remember after 9/11 the national guard troops stationed at airports had their M16s but no magazines in them. Maybe they had some on them but not sure. @cbp210 could maybe share some insight on this.

Not a great Perry fan but this one he hit out of the park. Hopefully he will turn them loose to do their job and keep drugs and Illegals out of Texas.

This is the only way that a message can be sent to those in Latin American fleeing their lousy economic situation that they are not welcome.

Till the boarder is secure there is no reason to discuss legalizing those here or deporting them.

Most of the guard members have already spent time overseas, away from family and careers. Seems a shame to have them do this also, when it really means nothing. Do we really think this will stop the flow - of course without shooting,.

@Fairlane - I like the idea - just making fun of the timing and the delivery - going from greasing the wheels in the Texas political arena to searching out nationally popular ideas for upcoming run for the white house.

14 yrs earlier might have helped prevent some of the current problems. & 14 Mill/ probably a good return on that investment to be recognized by the state; but remember - the ones that make it across are granted in state tuition fees as per a law passed by Rick Perry
