If I can get a nat gas generator capable of running my whole house efficiently as backup in the event of power outage...... Does it make economic sense to run the nat gas generator all the time as my primary power source and have the electric grid as my backup in the event of generator failure?

I would think the grid is more resilient and constantly running the NG generator would increase your chance of equipment failure due to wear and tear

You should run the numbers yourself to verify but I believe that the grid will be cheaper. I think your plan is a good one to have the ng as backup.

look at the amount of nat gas that the generator would use, and the price of nat gas...

buying electricity off the grid would be cheaper...

@GregButtle:

I would definitely go with the electric grid as primary. Using a natural gas generator as your primary source could potentially be more expensive than your light bill.

I have a 150kw generator on my office building and it costs $200 a day to run. Plus, these generators are for short term intermittent use. They are not designed to be run all the time for long periods.

I was told for sure it would be more expensive . I did all sorts of studies on this after the last hurricane . Of course these people selling the natural gas generators want to make sure you are spending the MAX amount of money they can get out of you .I read about a person somewhere up north that bought one & never needed it & the 6th yr needed it & it would not start . I concluded well if I spent $10,000 & mine wouldn't start I'd be mad enough to have a heart attack .

I decided I'm not so spoiled that I need my entire house to be cool . I need my bdr & bath & my Tv in that area & I have a window unit sitting in my garage to shove into one of the windows in our room . And yes the bedroom is on the back of the house & the window is almost down to the baseboard so it won't be seen .I need my icebox to work , kitchen stove & washer & dryer & computer & hot water heater .In our bedroom the Tv puts out enough light we need no lamps . I have 1 of those tiny night lights plugged into the wall in the bathroom & that's enough light to bathe .So at Lowes I used the catalogue they had in the store & figured all sorts of stuff out & searched on line . I spent maybe 4 or 5 wks . I figured the unit I was interested in would be about $2,200.00 I would risk that & be happy I had it ! Ok time to get a salesman & write up this deal right ? Wrong !!!!!!! Oh we don't sell that one ??What ??? it is in the book . Nope they don't sell , ok what about this one just above nope !!!!! Came home called a company got the runaround same sort of story . SO WE WILL LEAVE TOWN & JUST VACATION TILL WE CAN COME HOME for the next storm .

@sandman:

Never seen anything like it , there is ALWAYS someone who wants to **** on your parade ! Another thing after you get interested & decide ok I'm going to do this ( THEN ) you are told about the maintenance agreement ( YOU NEED )to make sure it will run when you need it to . So then it became very clear to me do I really want to pay for this stuff till I die just incase another hurricane comes ? I concluded I have homeowners insurance & there is nothing I can do during the storm & for the amt of money spent we can go on extended vacation .

As someone in the 'industry', I'll just say that I've seen people with a pool heater who have gotten bigger natural gas bills than electric bills in the same month.

And the generator would be running everything in your house.

Just food for thought.

@AtascaGuy

That's so true... seems like every time I turn in the heater to get the spa going (in the winter) was like $25 in natural gas... my pool builder told me I could heat the whole pool if I wanted, but estimated it would be like $250 to get it warm enough.

I just have a gas generator for use in case of hurricane stuff. It will keep the fridge running, lights, TV and a few floor fans.

That is enough to keep me content for a few days of a power outage. I also have 20 5 gallon gas cans stored for use in the event of.

I didn't even realize this was as possibility. Do you by any chance know the name of the company that set his system up?
