I did some research into the immigration issue. I believe that most if not all of the kids that crossed the border recently are going to be allowed to stay. This has less to do with the President and more to do with Congress. Congress passed laws years ago that provides illegal aliens enormous latitude. For example, most illegals just can't be sent back home. They are entitled to a hearing before an immigration judge. If the hearing doesn't go their way they then may apply for a hearing before the Bureau of Immigration Appeals.

When it comes to children there is this unwritten wink and a nod that grants them papers to reside in the U.S., at least "temporarily". The primary reason is minors cannot just be deported. They must be released to someone that can care for them. If no one is willing to take responsibility in their home country then......

In addition before the current crisis, whole families that crossed the border illegally are set up in special detention centers. By regulation these centers are equipped with sporting equipment so the kids don't get bored and are able to exercise. Along with free medical, dental care and schooling. Then there are the pregnant women that are here illegally simply to have their babies born here as they (babies) are granted automatic citizenship.

Another category are the people that come here legally on visas that simply never return home. They too can apply for permanent residence. Hundreds of them marry U.S. citizens in order to remain in the country. Most of them fraudulently in my opinion. It's funny because the average citizen would blame ICE regarding this issue when in actuality ICE doesn't issue visas. Visas are issued by the State Department. Besides there's another entity involved in this mess and that is Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Due to the fact the immigration courts are overwhelmed, thousands of illegals are given what's called a Notice to Appear. It is a document that basically says you're here illegally, however we will allow you to stay if you promise to later come back for a deportation hearing. Homeland Security personnel view this as a joke and refer it as a notice to disappear. Because rarely do illegals come back as instructed.

Consequently a President, and by extension the Executive Branch just can't deport someone until all legal avenues have been exhausted which could take years. So for those that are blaming the current President for this mess, you might want to redirect your ire to your Congressional representative.

These poor kids are coming here at a risk of being raped and killed. Also they are bringing diseases with them. I feel sorry for them but they need to stay home and not burden our already burdened system.

Unless the Texas legislature gives Texas school districts more money, Texas school districts don't have budgets that can educate all these kids.

What a waste. They will turn out to be Lawn boys and convicts competing for low end jobs American's used to do.

Deport them now before they find out how great our welfare system is.

Sorry all of you bleeding hearts out there but most of these kids are already too old to be educated properly even if education was important in their society.

At least for now most are cleaning houses, mowing lawns, and working in certain industries and will be as long as we are addicted to cheap labor.

I want to thank all of you for being able to have a rational discussion on this. As you now I am a frequent advocate for President Obama, but on this particular issue I disagree with him. Based upon the research I did I believe many of you get it and didn't let your dislike for the President (for some) prevent you from not seeing the forest for the trees as it did on another message board.

In order to have effective change with the immigration system the laws must be changed by Congress to cut off the avenues of a drawn out appeals process. Also birth right citizenship needs to be revoked if at least one parent is not an American citizen. Finally, in my opinion a person that violated the intent of their visa should not be granted citizenship simply because they married an American. If it's true love then the American should be more than happy to accompany his/her spouse to their home country to set up residence.

I know this will sound harsh to some of you. But that's just the way I see it.

Certainly these changes would be more effective and cost much less than building a damn fence or lining up troops on the border!

@blondie:
Could we buy ad space throughout the World Cup showing pictures of these kids and advise these countries not to send their kids here? To please utilize their local resources and international resources like the Red Cross?

I agree with you as far as it's not the Presidents fault. But I do not believe your research. Please show me proof and links to your so called statements. Otherwise all of the above are just opinions...........

First of all I didn't say none of this is on the President, as I indicated I disagree with him on the issue. What I'm trying to get people to see is that the Office of the President is just one dog in a very big fight.

This article made me tear right up. I cannot imagine what desperation I would have to feel in order to put my children through this trauma!!

@HumbleGirl:

"Last week, Johnson said Homeland Security is exploring options for faster repatriation of unaccompanied children, who by law have special protections that are not afforded to adult detainees."

"Immigration officials cannot simply deport an unaccompanied child as they would an adult. Unaccompanied children from Mexico generally are quickly returned to the border. Those from countries other than Mexico are supposed to be transferred from Border Patrol custody to the Office of Refugee Resettlement within 72 hours."

"Then the children are to be placed in a network of more than 90 state-licensed shelters and other facilities. The government searches for relatives or other sponsors in the U.S. to care for them while they await the outcome of their immigration cases. Roughly 90 percent are released from custody within about a month"

These paragraphs is a prime example of what I'm speaking of in this thread. As long as there is a law that provides children special protections their parents will continue to send them over here. It's not that I'm not sympathetic but it is not our responsibility to care for them. Our social service apparatus is being pushed to the brink. Border Patrol agents were not hired to be social workers.

I disagree with the President in that he wants immigration reform. But the most effective means of stopping this lies with Congress. That's why I said people are directing their ire at the wrong person. They need to let their voices be heard in Congressional offices.

What would you have to be facing that you would send your child off as these parents have done? No matter what the laws in this country...what are these people facing? Root cause analysis. Can we help the issue better from the front end?
