This is why I disagree with the gun control law. Not everyone should have a gun and no one should have AKA-47. Why would you need that? It's just a mass of destruction.

A three-year-old child is recovering after allegedly shooting himself in the foot after reportedly finding a gun in his home.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched on Wednesday, June 11 at 10:31 p.m. to the 9500 block of Fawn Park Court to a reported shooting. This residence is located in the Park Lakes area of Humble near Beltway 8.
“When deputies arrived, they learned that a three-year-old child removed a gun from a night stand and shot himself in the foot,” the HCSO report said.
The child was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital by EMS. The child was in stable condition. HCSO does not have an update on his condition at this time.
The father is facing charges of making a firearm accessible to a child.

Glad it is not life threatening and glad the father is facing charges for his stupidity

I agree... get a safe, gun locks, and as with any other dangerous object, keep them out the reach of children...

@Moon

What difference does it make if it's an AK-47, a hunting rifle in .308 or a .22 cute little pink rifle? So, one is scarier looking than the others, but the fact that a child got hurt because of neglicence of the parent(s) has nothing to do with how scarier the rifle looks...

I agree not everybody should have a gun... if you don't want one, nobody is forcing you to get one... and if someone wants one but legally can't (because of a conviction, etc.) yeah, I don't want them to get one.

Who needs an AK-47? As long as it's legal to possess, don't need to justify why it's needed/wanted.

It's difficult to get to your gun quickly when you are attacked in the middle of the night if it is in a safe.

@Undecided:

Guns used for self-defense need to be secured but quickly accessible... there are some devices designed to keep a gun reachable within seconds, but out of the hands of a child or unwanted users. For example, a drawer-sized safe, pistol pad (links to your alarm system), etc.

I don't know if this AK-47 was their home defense weapon, but In my opinion, that wouldn't be my first choice... If it's one with the fixed stock, it's not very versatile to use inside a home, plus the recoil may be too much for some users to handle. An AK-74 may be different, especially if fitted with a collapsible or movable stock.

For home defense, a handgun in 9mm or larger caliber, with a couple of extra magazines handy, or a defense style shotgun (short barrel, pistol grip, no buttstock), or an AR-15 with a collapsible stock and 16" or smaller barrel (careful there not to have a SBR without proper ATF stamps) would make a better choice than the AK. If the gun has rails to attach a flashlight, even better.

@Moon:
So you disagree with the gun control law because of how some people handle their guns? Then maybe we should look at changing car ownership laws because I disagree with how some people handle their autos! Come on! It's a damn shame what has happened to this child but this it the parents fault not the guns fault.

Also not sure where you were going with the whole AK-47 comment since it has nothing to do with this incident but frankly you don't have a clue what you are talking about. As long as I have my right to own a gun I will, when they change that law I will then become an outlaw.

That requires money. I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but no one wants to pay any more money. Plus the inexactness of mental science is so frustrating. There's no blood test that identifies what treatment needs to be given. It's all trial and error and driven by what the patient says and doesn't say. I just don't know how it will truly help unless someone figures out an accurate way to diagnose and treat.

There are certain safes that can access guns quickly. I personally have this unit for my ready access but I also have my alarm and several dogs ready to hold back the attacker if I need other guns in my larger safe.

Ok, this was a 3-year old....Therefore my revolutionary "out-of-the-box" idea is to keep your weapon "out of reach", maybe on a high shelf or in a closet(on a high shelf)...Similar to those medicines that you don't want them to get into...Maybe it's me....I dunno...

I agree the AK is not my first choice and I would rather prefer my COLT 45 or my glock 22 over the AK inside my house. I do however depending on my mood take the AK to my property in Splendora knowing meth heads and trespassers are in the area and chances I might run into them but 98% of the time my SIG 556 is my preferred choice.

@cbp210 I can somewhat agree with the 556 but it was really just designed to take down a 130 - 150 pound target when it was designed. The AK on the other hand was designed to take down a 200+ pound target. Also most AK have few failure rates per 1k rounds as well. Now having said that I have both so it does not really matter to me as i will use them all.

Am I missing something? Where does it say the child shot himself with an AK-47?
