So, any of you have any?

Have you ever regretted getting it?

What would you look for in a tattoo shop? I mean, how do you know they do good work?

Have you been to any of the shops around here?

just asking 'cuz a friend of a friend is interested... I don't have any...

Heavens no, I don't have my ears pierced either...my eldest got a small shamrock on top of her foot and I told her by the time she is 50 it is going to look like a piece of wilted lettuce on her foot. She doesn't believe me.

She then got a "drunk tat" of a heart with zebra striping or something like that on her other side of ankle...bless her.

I got one in 1995 when I was 25. Still looks decent. I plan on getting one more to commemorate my two girls.

I have one on my ankle. It has aged to the point of looking like a bar code. I don't necessarily regret it, but I wouldn't object to covering it with something else that looks better. I have some ideas for other art I might like to get one day but honestly, until my kids have every little thing they need I wouldn't spend money on anything like that for myself. My extra goes to shoes, pajamas etc. these days. If I do spend money on myself it is for the reflexology place because being relaxed and not hurting = being a better parent.

Word of mouth and seeing actual finished projects is the best way to find a shop. A good shop should be spotless, should make you feel comfortable and no one there should mind if you just want to hang out for a while and get a feel for things. Pay attention to the art itself, but also an opinion with regards to execution, size, placement and integration with other existing or future projects.

Gee golly, MooMaw, I thought I was the only woman in the world with unpierced ears.

*edited: no tattoos either. Good thing. They would not be pretty in all these wrinkles!

nope, you are not...I thought I was...lol...just never did have the desire...strange I know.
I think tats are a age thing...I could be wrong, but growing up in the 60/70's the only people who would have tattoos were men who fought in wars...my dad fought in WWII and had a huge Navy anchor on forearm with my mom's name . You NEVER heard of women with tats, they were frowned upon. So moving forward, it is rare NOT to see anyone without one. I have seen great works of art...but I also understand how the skin changes when you get older and always wonder if that is going to be a concern for those who do have tattoos.

@MooMaw:

I agree with everything you said here, MooMaw. The only tattoos I remember seeing as a kid were those on my cousin's arms when he returned from Korea (Navy). I can't imagine going through the pain and constantly living with the color and designs. No resale value either!

@traxla:

I have three.

I've never regretted any of them, however If I had to do it over again I'd slightly adjust the placement of the one on my arm.

Don't look for a good tattoo shop, look for a quality individual artist. Visit popular shops online and search through artist portfolio's to see if they have a style you think looks great and matches with your design concept. Visiting tattoo expo's are also a great idea. If a shop doesn't have artist portfolio's available that's a huge red flag.

If you have a unique concept for your tattoo most shops require you to visit with the artist you've chosen for a consultation to draw up what you want, and a deposit for the work before you ever touch needle to skin.

EDIT: Also for all the people saying your tattoos are going to look terrible when your older that's only true if you don't take care of them. Like changing the oil or air filter on a car tattoos need to be maintained by taking care of the skin with moisturizer, sun screen etc... You also need to do occasional touch ups to color or line detail which the original artist will typically do FOR FREE! They want to see their work preserved just as much as you do!

My husband has anywhere from 30-40 (I lost count). If he puts on a long sleeve shirt, none are visible. He has got some work done at "The Magic Needle" and has been happy with their work.

I have a few, all in places that are concealed with normal clothes. One day, when I have the time to sit and get stabbed a million times, I would like to get a Native American Orca done on my upper back. I have a small one now, below the base of my neck, but I want something bigger.

Something similar to the one below would be cool.

well.. thanks! this has been insightful...

Having some servicemen as my father figures, I thought that it was kinda normal... if you were in the military, but wasn't very common with civilians where I grew up...

I like them, when done in a way that can be covered when/if needed, but have never seriously thought about going thru and get one... for me doing 30-40 or covering a full limb is overdoing it, but I don't think/see anything wrong with those who have done it... I think a full sleeve looks cool, but don't see anyone getting away with that in an office environment... at least the places I've worked at...

I was in Austin last weekend for the MotoGP race and seems like I was the only person without one... felt kinda naked...
