As a business owner along the FM1960 corridor between Humble and Atascocita, I have seen too many accidents that claim lives and nothing seems to be going on to improve this length of road. The most dangerous aspects of this road are the facts that there are no usable shoulders and the lighting is basically non-existent.

I would like to find out who the best entity would be to contact to at least get some lighting along that stretch of road between Humble and Lake Houston. I feel that would be the best starting point to help alleviate some of the dangers of this thoroughfare. I understand that there are improvements in the works for FM1960 but I have not seen any updates on the progress.

I would be more than willing, as a property owner in this area, to head up a coalition of like minded business owners to spearhead any type of effort to get something done or at least get an updated timeline on the proposed improvements. I have reason to believe that because this is an unincorporated section of Harris County, this may be the biggest problem.

Well I don't want to be a Debbie Downer and I do applaud your willingness to work toward change. But I see the biggest issue as wreckless driving speeding , texting etc. A more immediate help would be some patrol and actually writing tickets in this stretch. Many of these accidents are in broad daylight. Honestly. I'm not saying you're not correct. But there are other issues.

@TexasPromowear:
I agree. I also would like to see a center divider and and designated turning lanes instead of a median that everyone ends up driving on to try to turn into businesses.

I agree with Lace the problems are more geared towards reckless and irresponsible drivers. I have driven through much more questionable road conditions than 1960 and accidents are at a minimum. You might want to start contacting all stakeholders like other business people such as yourself and depending on the areas of question your local Sheriff laison, Precint 4 :Laison, County Commissioners and HOA's to address concerns and how this affects them. I would be more willing to help you and now that you mention it I am going to start bringing my camera and taking pictures of all these reckless drivers and the text drivers.

I believe they should lower speed and ticket drivers abusing that speed limit more lighting would definitely be a plus. I applaud you as a business owner to want something done. There should also be more red lights to slow cars down

I don't think they need to lower the speed limit - just enforce the one's we have. I agree that texting, drunk driving, drag racing and excessive speed are the primary issues. It is basically a free-for-all around here because there is no traffic enforcement.

Red lights are seen as more of a suggestion.
Drunk drivers are routinely out and about in our area because nobody is working the bar areas out here.
Speeding - why not? No worries about a ticket out here.

I think business owners that want to band together and try to put some pressure on the right places should be asking for traffic enforcement. Strict, no leeway traffic enforcement. That might not fix everything, but it sure would be step in the right direction.

So the Chronicle is reporting about the wreck on Sunday morning that had the two fatalities. Traveling at excessive speed. (...again...)

Lowering the speed limit doesn't change anything. Enforcement will help stem the tide. Who doesn't make absolutely sure they are doing the speed limit when traveling through an area known as a "speed trap"? People used to fly over the bridge in Humble on 1960 right before the 59 overpass. There were several wrecks there from people pulling out from the side road on the North (from Home Depot area) even with a posted speed limit of 35mph. It changed when everyone came to see Humble police sitting there on a regular basis (and they still do) writing tickets for speeding.

I haven't seen an accident there in years.

@lana7018:

Yep.. speed and I read elsewhere that they weren't wearing their seatbelts and were ejected. I agree that the answer is more police presence. The only time I see cops on that stretch of road is when there's an accident. Sad..

This makes sense. Pulling people over for speeding, illegal lane changes, failure to yield, etc... might ultimately slow people down and help curb some of the nonsense.

Before there was any commercial development on the North side of 1960 between WLH Pkwy and Timber Forest of course there weren't as many issues. Now people are cutting and turning all over the place in their passion to get from Target to Specs and back to Petco.

The idea of somewhow fixing the problem of distracted drivers who are texting or phoning by using a camera to take pictures of them.... while you are driving.... might want to re-think that one.

Yes lets put up more stop lights and drive at 30 miles per hour that will fix the problem. This is total bull.

Problem is the road is overcrowded and needs to be fixed. There is no shoulder on most of it. Stop lights are a disaster as there are too many and they are not synchronized. Too many strip malls with their own entrance and exits.

Somehow this road needs to be planed out so there at least 6 lanes most of the way and underpass's overpass's at key intersections. Road is a disaster the way it is currently constructed.

Hate to say it but the only way it will change is if our state road people sees enough accidents to justify making these type of changes. I have no faith in our county officials tackling this problem

I agree timbom. We need over/underpasses at major intersections. Stop lights cause more accidents and lowering the speed limit will just cause more frustration for already frustrated drivers.

Speeding is also not THE problem. It is people not paying attention and being distracted. I regularly drive at least 5mph over the limit. (don't lecture me, not going to get into with you) I always stay in control of my vehicle, not distracted, and paying attention to everything. No swerving in and out of traffic.

The main problem is people not paying attention, drag racing and using the middle lane as their own passing lane.

PS: People, when you pull out into the middle lane from a side road or parking lot, you are not supposed to speed up until you can get into traffic...you are supposed to stay there until you have a safe opening to get into the flow of traffic safely.

I came upon this accident around 8:10 AM while on my way to work. I travel this road every Sunday at this time and actually enjoy the drive as there are hardly any drivers out at this time. It is a straight drive into Humble. So I am thinking as I have to turn around and go another way into Humble, "How in the world did someone get into such an accident at this time of day when it is such an easy drive? On a Sunday, no less." Guess some people are just that lousy at driving and do some really stupid things. Thank God they did not hurt anyone else. I don't think there is a cure for this kind of driver. Even with law enforcement, they will drive while drunk, talk on their cell phones, text while driving and speed cause they are always late. They will do this until they kill themselves and probably others.

Needs a shoulder and a physical barrier between oncoming lanes.

enforcement against distracted driving.

50-60 mph is the normal traffic flow on 1960 between Humble and Atascocita and should be perfectly safe - eliminate left turns from business along 1960 via physical barriers.

Seems like I see someone making a U-Turn on 1960 monthly and I only drive that road once/week.
