Street Begging/Panhandling

Is this illegal here, or just "frowned upon?" As in individuals with handmade signs asking for money on public streets?

You don't have to worry about those trivial things, Fairlane...we'll take care of you.

Thank you...Maybe I can actually do something like sell Chiclets or wash windshields with dirty water....but I wouldn't want to make too much as to mess up my unemployment and Lone Star card.

If you're talking about what we call "Beggar's Corner" (1960 and WLH) I have called the county about it and what they told me was that unless they're creating a nuisance, there is no law against it. Because its an unincorporated area, it does not fall under anything but county jurisdiction. If we want to change it, we'd have to do a petition with several hundered names and present it to the county commissioners. And that's not guaranteed, that's to just get them to look at it. I don't mind when its the fire dept and the veterans, but I've had some of those guys come right up to my window demanding money.

No, not there. There was a man with a little boy right across from Murphy's (Walmart...was cutting through to get to Spec's) standing there with a sign for help/work, etc. I stopped and rolled down my window and asked if he wanted me to go get them some food/drink (it was so hot outside), but he said someone else was getting them food and he just needed money. I hate to judge, but the dad appeared to be very drunk. He was leaning on his son stumbling as he went back to the curb.

Dang...it's so hard to help people.

NEVER give them money. They usually use it for drugs, alcohol, etc.

Saw them the other day too.

I don't give them money ever. I have driven through a fast food place here or there and given it to them in the past, but only one seemed to appreciate that. They just want cash, and it sucks to not want to give it to them because you can't trust what they're going to do with it.

I just feel bad when they bring a little kid out there with them.

Beggar's Corner---I like that---and so true.

I pick up my cell phone and pretend to be in animated conversation when I see them. They seem to get the message.

I am just as appalled by all of the supposed church groups or those that are saying they are collecting for childrens relief organizations.

I will give money for kids out collecting for a sports team, drill team, or something like that. However, those kids are usually working at car washes to EARN what they need. I will always try to swing in and make a cash donation for those groups.

The adults standing around at the intersection collecting for their church or childrens relief are the ones I wish we could run off. If nobody donated to them I think they'd move on to greener pastures...

I don't mind donating to the Vet groups or fire departments. But I have a hard time that parents let their kiddos dash in and out of that busy intersection in the lanes - that's so dangerous. I know they are trying to collect for a select team, but I would think that's part of the cost when you join those teams. There's a reason I never did (the money). I know that sounds harsh. I would rather see them do a carwash - I usually will swing by and donate a couple of bucks and don't even expect a carwash. but I hate seeing those kids in the lanes - it only takes one car not paying attention.

I'll sign a petition! Where's it at?

If you want to have some fun with those guys, go online and print off a bunch of job applications (places like retail and cleaners - part time stuff works well) and when the come to your window put that in the bucket.

P.S. They usually don't like it when I do this but it works for me.

most places have outlawed panhandling in the streets through safety and jaywalking ordinances; but texas protects it under freedom of speech unless local jurisdictions ban it on a case by case basis.

People die in Texas every year collectinng money like thiis.

It's too hot to panhandle on the streets. People should just do it on public message boards in the comfort of their own homes.
