Free Cancer Screenings At Memorial Hermann

The Memorial Hermann Cancer Center-Northeast is hosting free screenings for prostate, breast and lung cancer on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The screenings are open to the Lake Houston community and will be held at the Cancer Center located on the Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital campus, 18960 North Memorial Drive off U.S. Highway 59.

Participants are asked to register for the cancer screenings by calling 713-222-CARE (2273).

It is estimated that more than 44,000 Texans will be diagnosed with a new case of prostate, breast or lung cancer in 2016, according the American Cancer Society (ACS). The ACS also estimates that the three cancers will result in more than 225,000 deaths nationwide this year.

Notably, September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men, aside from skin cancer. About one man in 7 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, according to the ACS. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind only lung cancer. The ACS estimates that in 2016, more than 180,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be found, and more than 26,000 deaths will result.

While prostate cancer can be a serious disease, most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from it, according to ACS. Indeed, more than 2.9 million men in the United States diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point are still alive today.

Screening for cancer before symptoms are shown in the body and undergoing screening tests regularly may detect certain cancers early, when effective treatment is most likely, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Underscoring the CDC’s recommendation, in May, Steven Smith, M.D. and Julie Brantley, M.D., both dermatologists affiliated with Memorial Hermann Northeast, tested 38 patients for skin cancer during a free screening at the hospital and found two potential diagnoses.

For more information about different types of cancers, and cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment, go to www.memorialhermann.org/cancer. Free skin cancer screenings will again take place at Memorial Hermann Cancer Center-Northeast in spring 2017.

Located just east of George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Memorial Hermann Northeast is home to the longest-accredited cancer center in Houston outside of the Texas Medical Center. The Memorial Hermann Cancer Center-Northeast is accredited as a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
